Why does Murder She Wrote still look so good?

My family and I have been watching Murder She Wrote this winter and I’ve been blown away by how good some of the shots look, especially the exteriors. Of course there were a lot of great looking movies and shows in the 1980s, but what’s impressive about this one is how fast production had to move. I think they were filming each episode in one to two weeks.

The contrast, the color, and the je ne sais quoi of film create a look that’s hard to capture these days on digital.

In the video below I explore some elements that stand out and talk about what we might be able to learn from Murder She Wrote when it comes to indie filmmaking.
